Sheikh Sultan gave the following answer to the question (this is the translation of his answer) :-
Wa alikum assalam,
Wearing taweez whose writing is not from the Quran is forbidden (Haraam) in Islam and if it had writing that is not understandable it might put the person into Shirk because those people who wrote that may be Sorcerers and those that seek help from Jinn. Arabs use to make their Camels wear Strings to protect them from evil eye but the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) ordered to remove it from the camels and said: "Whoever wears an amulet may Allah not complete for him (his request for which he wore the amulet)".(1)
If the writing in the amulet is from the Quran, then some of the early Muslim scholars understood it to be permissible (Halaal) with the following conditions: (A) it is only from the Quran, (B) the written Quranic text is in Arabic and clearly understandable, (C) the person wearing it must NOT believe that the amulet itself is what keeps the harm away but rather it is Allah who gives the protection, (D) the person waring the amulet can ensure that the amulet will not have Najasah (filth) on it nor will it be taken to a place of Najasah (such as a toilet).
However, that which is in the Sunnah (of the Prophet) related to us is to leave waring the Amulets (Tameemah or Taweez) due to the general understanding of a number of Hadith.
Among such hadith is the hadith of Zainab the wife of Abdullah ibn Masud (r), she said, ‘Abdullah saw in a thread in my neck and asked, “What is this?” I replied, “It is a thread wherein Ruqya (spell) was done on me.” So he took it and cut it up and then he said, “You, the family of Abdullah (Ibn Masud) are free of need of Shirk. I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) say that, ‘Indeed the spells, charms and amulets are Shirk.’” So I said, “My eye was swirling (or flickering) and I used to go to a So and So the Jewish person, whenever he did Spell on the eye it settled down.” Abdullah explained, “That is only due to the work of Shaitan who would prick the eye with his hand and whenever the (Jewish man) did Ruqya, Shaitan would stop (pricking the eye).(2)
It would be sufficient for you to say as the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) would say, “Adh-hibil-ba’sa, Rabbannaas, washfi antashaafi, laa shifa’a illaa shifa’uka, shifaa’un laa ughaadiru saqaman (Drive away the harm (sickness), Oh Lord of mankind, and heal me for You are the healer, there is no healing except your healing, grant me a healing that doesn’t leave behind any ailment)”.(3)” End of the hadith.
Furthermore, I don’t know of Hasan and Hussain (the two dearest children to the Prophet who he would have liked to keep protected, I dont khnow of them two) wearing amulets (for protection) and I do not believe at all any validity for wearing these.
Instead, a Muslim ought to hold by the Sunnah that has come about this matter. Among the Sunnah in this matter are the recitation of the Ayatul-Kursi for verily whoever recites it during the night, a protector from Allah does not cease to keep watch over him nor will the Shaytan near him until the morning, as it is mentioned in the hadith.(4)
Also, the dua made by the Prophet (s.a.w) over his two little grandsons Hasan and Hussain, “A-oodhu bi kalimaatillahi-ttaamati min kulli shaitaanin wa haammatin wa min kulli aynin lammatin (I seek refuge in Allah from every Shaytan (devil) and harmful beast and from every envious evil eye).”(5)
