Assalamu alaikum Sheikh,

Is i'tikaaf an act of fard-e-kifaayah, that in every mosque atleast one person must be doing i'tikaaf or else the entire locality has a due in front of Allah for that.
Or is it just sunnah for every individual.

Wa alaikumussalaam wa rahmatullah

As I mentioned yesterday in the Q&A session at Maidstone Masjid talk, I'tkikaf is a Sunnah/Mustahab/Mandub (i.e. recommended and encouraged).  It is not Fard Kifayah for a town nor Masjid.

The Prophet (s) did not order I'tikaf nor something like that to make it a fard kifayah.  He merely did it regularly and his wives kept doing it after his death, which makes it a Sunnah/Mustahab that is encouraged.

Wassalamu alaikum
